From Tuesday May 17 to Saturday May 28, the city of Cannes will rediscover the excitement of the Festival and the Croisette will vibrate to the rhythm of films and stars. Here, in figures, are the strong points of this edition like no other.

The Cannes Film Festival celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. In three quarters of a century, the most publicized event in the world has been canceled five times: in 1939 due to the war, in 1948 and 1950 for budgetary reasons, in 1968 due to the student revolt and in 2020 for cause of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The film “The Truman Show” celebrates its 24th anniversary this year and it is a scene from the feature film – the one where Jim Carrey climbs the steps of the staircase leading to the outside – which appears on the official Festival poster. .

This year, 65 feature films are presented at the Festival, both in competition and out of competition. The opening film, out of competition, is “Cut!” by Michael Hazanavicius. The latter, known for his “The Artist”, changed the title of his feature film a few weeks ago. Indeed, the work was called “Z (like Z)” – a reference to zombie films – but the war in Ukraine and the use of the letter “Z” by the Russian army convinced Michel Hazanavicius to change his title.

Of the 65 works, 15 are produced or co-directed by women, i.e. 23.8%, a record for the cultural event. In addition, five films in the Official Selection are directed by women, another record, the previous one was four.

Among the 20 films presented in Un certain regard, eight are first works. This is particularly the case with “War Pony”, directed by Gina Gammell and Riley Keough, granddaughter of Elvis Presley.

Six highly anticipated feature films are presented out of competition. These are “Top Gun: Maverick” by Joseph Kosinski, “Elvis” by Baz Luhrmann, “Mascarade” by Nicolas Bedos, “November” by Cédric Jimenez, “Three thousand years waiting for you” by George Miller and “ The Innocent by Louis Garrel.
