The Council of Ministers has approved four agreements that together represent an investment of more than 360 million euros that will be allocated to the Canary Islands, a commitment that the President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, has thanked and that he considers a commitment from the Government of Spain with «the needs of the islands».

Specifically, the Council of Ministers has approved two Royal Decrees to improve the tourism competitiveness of the Canary Islands (50 million), and “modernize the most important economic sector of the islands” for “sustainable tourism” and for the financing of actions contemplated in the ‘Sustainable Energy Strategy in the Canary Islands’ (302 million).

He explained that these 302 million euros, allocated by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, are managed directly by the Government of the Canary Islands, while the rest, up to a total of 466 million euros, are managed of the State.

“It is a clear commitment to green transformation and an economic amount not received before by the Canary Islands in its history to change the energy model”, he celebrated.

Likewise, the distribution of 7.3 million euros to the Canary Islands has been approved for the preservation of the coastal space and water resources, specifically, for the adaptation to the risk of flooding and the digitization of the water cycle, and another 3, 2 million more for actions to conserve marine biodiversity.

Ángel Víctor Torres has celebrated that it is “an important day for the Canary Islands”, because they are “relevant” transfers for the archipelago, especially for progress in energy transition.

The head of the Canarian Executive has stressed that with these funds progress will be made in decarbonisation, in the development of renewable energies and self-consumption will be multiplied by 10 on the islands. Likewise, he advanced that the Government of the Canary Islands is already working on the call to be able to access these subsidies.

The Canary Islands have “natural resources to promote, such as photovoltaic and wind energy, both marine and terrestrial, and for geomotive energy, with great capacity”, he recalled.
