The Minister of Equality, Justice and Social Policies, Beatriz Artolazabal, yesterday rejected “any attempt to manipulate the meaning of the original claim of the Korrika” after in the last edition not only photographs of ETA prisoners could be seen, but also ‘Josu Ternera’ carrying the witness in a section in Iparralde.
To questions from the representative of the PP Cs group, Carmelo Barrio, the councilor rejected “any other symbology outside the unitary and shared sense of the mobilization”, although she also pointed out that the Basque Government must protect “both the dignity of the victims and the freedom of expression”.
Barrio denounced “the political use” made of Korrika in its latest edition and the “use of Basque as an element of confrontation.” “It has become a constant expression of radical provocations, of disrespect for the victims of terrorism and of an obscene display of characters, of slogans, of attitudes, that deteriorate our coexistence,” he insisted.
Artolazabal recalled that the Korrika is a social initiative “in defense and vindication of the promotion and normalization of the Basque language”, a citizen project that “arouses a lot of plural and massive support, which cannot be used or manipulated”.
