In view of announced warning strikes in local transport, employers in Saxony have canceled upcoming collective bargaining negotiations. The Verdi union then threatened further warning strikes on Tuesday evening. Against the background of the nationwide strike, no negotiation result is expected on Wednesday, said the negotiator of the Municipal Employers’ Association (KAV) Saxony, Jens Meiwald, according to a statement. He offered a new trial date of March 19th.

“Of course this increases the likelihood of strikes,” Verdi negotiator Paul Schmidt told the German Press Agency. The collective bargaining commission will discuss how to proceed on Wednesday. “It certainly didn’t contribute to de-escalation.” Verdi had originally hoped to be able to enter into the negotiations on Wednesday. So far there hasn’t even been an offer from the employer.

So far, Verdi has only called for a warning strike in regional transport in some Saxon regions. The collective bargaining here is also about more money for the employees. The union wants to achieve better working conditions in local transport; discussions on this took place on Wednesday. Verdi had called for work stoppages in local public transport nationwide in the coming days. The main strike day will be March 1st. On that day, Fridays For Future is organizing numerous demonstrations against the climate crisis.
