At least eight people have died in a landslide caused by heavy rain in Colombia. Another seven people were injured and 20 houses were destroyed, according to the South American country’s civil defense on Twitter. The Colombian newspaper “El Espectador”, citing the Secretariat for Emergency and Disaster Risk Management, even reported 13 dead in the town of Quetame, around 50 kilometers from the capital Bogotá. It had rained so heavily in Quetame on Tuesday morning that several streams and rivers burst their banks and turned into a torrential tidal wave.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. “The death that has come to Quetame, Cundinamarca shows the urgent need to organize the territory around the water,” wrote Petro, who is currently in Brussels for the EU-Latin America summit, on Twitter.
