The driver of a VW bus drove through the parapet of the Stone Bridge in Regensburg early Tuesday morning. The medieval landmark of the city may not be driven on at all. The man was not injured, but police have not yet estimated the extent of the damage.

The police told Bayrischer Rundfunk that the man drove his VW bus onto the bridge at around 1:20 a.m. and crashed into the stone side barrier. As a result, the vehicle broke through the wall and ended up hanging with the front section over the abyss. According to a police spokesman, the driver was able to free himself and then left the scene of the accident without permission.

Nevertheless, the 66-year-old man was found by a police car shortly afterwards and taken to the police station.

It is still unclear why the man drove onto the bridge. However, the police spokesman emphasized to BR that it could have been worse. Because the area at the foot of the Stone Bridge would also like to be used by the Regensburg “party people”. Fortunately, nobody was there at the time of the accident, the spokesman said, because otherwise the falling bridge stones would certainly have led to serious injuries.
