According to an evaluation commissioned by the German Donations Council, private individuals donated around 5.67 billion euros to charitable causes last year. It was the second best year for donations since the survey began in 2005. This was announced by the umbrella organization of 70 non-profit organizations on Wednesday in Berlin on the “Balance sheet of helping” 2022, which was created with market researchers from GfK.

The previous high was reached in 2021 with around 5.76 billion euros – it was considered an exceptional year, for example because of the flood in the Ahr valley. The donation council said that the solidarity of the donors was unbroken despite high inflation and rising energy prices. The people had provided help in particular for the people who had fled from Ukraine, said Donation Council Managing Director Martin Wulff.

Despite the high total, a negative trend continues: At 18.7 million, the number of donors is lower than ever before in the survey (2012: 22.5 million). However, donors donate money several times a year, and the amount per donation also increases.

The figures are projections based on monthly self-reports from 10,000 participants aged 10 and over. For example, corporate donations, donations to political parties and large donations over 2500 euros are not taken into account.
