The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, announced this Tuesday in Davos (Switzerland) -where he is attending the annual world economic forum, which is recovering attendance after the pandemic- that the leaders of Sweden and Finland will attend the NATO summit as guests which will take place in Madrid from June 28 to 30 next. Both countries have recently requested their intention to join the North Atlantic Organization as partners, just after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. A claim to which Turkey, one of the largest NATO countries, objects. Finland shares a border with Russia and both countries have shown their international neutrality for years.
The announcement was made during a speech in which Sánchez placed special emphasis on denouncing the “Putin regime” and the “humanitarian crisis” that his invasion is causing.
“Let’s not be mistaken, the brutal aggression against Ukraine is also an aggression against the European Union (EU)” Sánchez pointed out in the Swiss town, where he said that Putin questions the “values” of the community club. The NATO summit that hosts our country (committed from the governments of Mariano Rajoy before the arrival of Sánchez in 2018) is the great international event of the legislature and represents the greatest security challenge experienced in decades by Spain.
During his speech, Pedro Sánchez has shown his desire to speed up the NATO membership process of Finland and Sweden, whose integration into NATO must first be approved in the parliaments of each of the member countries. “It is something very important for the stability of the European Union and the future of NATO” he has pointed out about the future incorporation of these Nordic countries.
