Series of ‘Micro’ Earthquakes Shake Southern Utah Overnight

IRON COUNTY, Utah, June 9, 2024 (Gephardt Daily) — A series of small earthquakes, with the largest measuring magnitude 2.9, rattled southern Utah overnight, according to data from the U.S. Geological Survey.

The seismic activity commenced on Saturday at 8:22 p.m. with a magnitude 2.5 quake striking four miles northwest of Enoch in Iron County. Fortunately, there were no reports of damage or injuries resulting from this initial tremor.

Approximately four and a half hours later, at 12:46 a.m. on Sunday, another micro quake, measuring magnitude 2.6, was recorded 5.8 miles north of Enoch. Once again, there were no reports of any significant impact.

Just six minutes later, at 12:52 a.m., a slightly larger quake with a magnitude of 2.9 hit the same area northwest of Enoch. Despite the increased intensity, there were still no reports of damage or injuries caused by this seismic event.

Fifty-eight minutes after the third quake, at 1:50 a.m. on Sunday, a fourth micro earthquake registering at magnitude 2.4 struck five miles west of Enoch. Again, no notable damage or injuries were reported as a result of this tremor.

Although a handful of local residents reported feeling the earthquakes to the U.S. Geological Survey, there were no confirmed reports of significant consequences. Interestingly, some individuals who experienced the tremors but did not report them attributed the shaking to bad dreams, heavy meals before bedtime, or romantic encounters with loved ones or acquaintances.

Overall, despite the series of ‘micro’ earthquakes in southern Utah, there were no reports of any damage or injuries resulting from the seismic activity.
