49 students and teachers were injured by pepper spray in a clash at a Berlin school. The headmistress, who wanted to separate arguing students, was taken to hospital with a broken hand, Berlin police announced on Tuesday. Several investigations into dangerous and simple bodily harm were initiated.

At the high school in Gropiusstadt, a district in the Neuk├Âlln district, several 14 and 15 year old teenagers clashed on Monday. As a result, those involved sprayed pepper spray, and then a previously uninvolved 15-year-old started a fight.

A 38-year-old teacher and a 30-year-old teacher were also attacked and sprayed with irritant gas during an attempt at mediation. The 52-year-old headmistress, who wanted to separate the students, was pushed and suffered a fracture.

Only the crews of several radio patrols were able to initially calm the situation. However, the 21-year-old brother of a student involved in the fight then attacked two officers and punched one in the face.

The man who continued to threaten the police officers was overpowered and temporarily arrested. He was released after being processed for identification purposes. The 21-year-old now has to answer for assault on law enforcement officers, threats and insults. The cause of the altercation was unclear.
