Netanyahu thanked Scholz for the friendship between Germany and Israel. He described the German-Israeli relationship as a “trustworthy alliance”. The relationship of trust and friendship between the two countries is expressed, among other things, in the fact that “we stand together here today”.
The world has changed since the end of World War II, said the Israeli head of government. “Germany has changed.” The Jewish state was founded 75 years ago, and since then Jews have learned to “defend themselves”. Today it is more important than ever to “recognize early signs of evil”. The threats to Jews are different today, said Netanyahu, with a view to Iran, among other things.
Like numerous Israeli politicians before him, Netanyahu visited the memorial in Berlin-Grunewald to start his short visit to Germany. After a minute’s silence, Scholz and Netanyahu lit candles together to commemorate the victims of the Holocaust.
The memorial at Gleis 17 commemorates the beginning of the deportation, the so-called Ost-Transporte, of more than 50,000 Berlin Jews from autumn 1941 to National Socialist concentration and extermination camps in the east.
