Several players have skipped the Titans voluntary offseason program, including defensive lineman Jeffery Simmons as well as running back Derrick Henry. Turron Davenport, ESPN reports that Henry and Simmons are now back at the team’s practice facility in preparation for this week’s mandatory minicamp.
Simmons posted workout videos for this season, and he also attended Von Miller’s Las Vegas pass-rushing summit last week.
Davenport says Simmons will play at around 295 pounds this season. Simmons was listed by the Titans at 305 last year.
Simmons is eligible to be extended his contract after he has made 135 tackles and 13.5 sacks in three seasons. He also had 32 quarterback hits, 19 tackles for losses, and 32 quarterback hits. He is the 19th overall selection in 2019, coming off his first Pro Bowl season.
The Titans exercised their fifth-year option and locked him in for 2023 at $10.7million, which is fully guaranteed. He is keen to sign a long-term contract, and the Titans are interested in that.
Henry has two years remaining on his current contract and the Titans are open for an extension. Henry is expected to earn $12 million as a base salary and $15 million towards the cap in 2022.
Only fifth is his $12.5 million annual average.
Henry was leading the league’s rushers when he hurt his foot during a Week 8 match against the Colts. Henry returned to the playoff game against Bengals with only 62 yards and one touchdown on 20 carries.
He was the league’s leader in rushing in 2019 & 2020.
