Germany is a flying country, and the corona pandemic has not changed that. And even the climate crisis is not stopping many people from flying. According to the German Airport Association ADV, around 35 million passengers were counted at all German airports in the first quarter of this year alone. Security at German airports is all the more important. And according to the current airport check by the pilots’ union “Vereinigung Cockpit”, things are better than ever.

Overall, flying to and from Germany is becoming safer and safer. But which airport is the best? The experts have examined this – and filtered out the safest from the 28 largest airports in Germany. The ranking was based primarily on three criteria: runway excursion (prevents the runway from deviating), runway incursion (stable and precise approach possible) and taxi occurrence (possibility of vertical and horizontal approach). Based on the criteria that are elementary for a safe flight from the pilot’s point of view, the union assigned marks and identified the safest and least secure airports.

But of course there is also the other side of the coin: the airports that performed the worst. The bottom of the list this year is Düsseldorf-Weeze Airport. Mannheim, Lübeck and Saarbrücken land just before that. But even if the airports are not among the safest in the country, they are not immediately unsafe. All airports in Germany have exceeded the minimum requirements for safe air traffic.
