MANILA, Philippines — Officials said Friday that Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the new Philippine President, was positive for coronavirus. He will be isolated for approximately a week.
Trixie Cruz-Angeles, Press Secretary, said Marcos Jr. has a mild fever but is otherwise fine. He will attend the U.S Embassy event, but would also join via video a meeting with governors or mayors about coronavirus booster shots.
Angeles stated that all people who had contact with the president, including his son tested negative for the virus.
Marcos Jr. and Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister, met at the Presidential Place in Manila on Wednesday. However it was not clear when Marcos Jr. became infected.
Marcos Jr. was tested positive for the virus after a trip to Spain two years ago. He had trouble breathing and had to be admitted to an emergency room in Manila. He was eventually able to recover.
After a stunning political comeback by the Marcoses, he was sworn in to office on June 30, after a huge victory. After a two-decade-long reign marked by human rights violations and plunder, Ferdinand Marcos, his father and nameake was overthrown in an 1986 People Power pro-democracy revolt.
