This Harley is one of a kind: Bernd Osinischow from Sülzfeld near Suhl didn’t buy his first bike, but quickly turned it himself. In 328 working hours he made the cult two-wheeler out of wood in his home hobby workshop. “It’s not a specific type, I looked at pictures from different years of construction and found out what can be made of wood,” says the 64-year-old.
He used several types of wood for his Harley: the seat and wheels are made of spruce, the engine is made of oak, the gearbox is made of beech, the rear light is made of mahogany and the fuel filler cap is made of meranti wood. The license plate bears the retired corrections officer’s initials and year of birth.
The passionate hobby turner came up with the idea of the wooden machine through a friend. This had carved a motorcycle with the chainsaw. In mid-August last year, Osinischow – who doesn’t ride a motorcycle himself – began working on his Harley. At the end of November his machine was ready. It is currently on display in the shop of a specialist dealer for forestry and gardening equipment in Ostheim, in Lower Franconia, just a few kilometers away.
According to Osinischow, he has already received several offers for the wooden Harley: “I have always rejected them, the machine cannot be sold.”
