According to the Greens, former Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) will take part in the farewell event for the former party and parliamentary group leader and Environment Minister Jürgen Trittin. The Green Party parliamentary group leaders Britta Haßelmann and Katharina Dröge told the Editorial Network Germany (RND) that they were very pleased that Merkel had accepted their invitation.

Merkel and Trittin know each other from many years of parliamentary work. “They have worked together a lot in recent years in their different roles – in the government, from the opposition – and in the knowledge that they sometimes have different political views, explained the faction leaders. They pointed out that this was an internal faction event. About “Spiegel” reported on Merkel’s appearance at Trittin’s farewell on Tuesday, but there had not yet been any confirmation from the Green faction.

Trittin announced in December that he would resign from his Bundestag mandate. At the beginning of January he left parliament after around 25 years. From 1998 to 2005 he was Minister of the Environment. Merkel was Trittin’s predecessor in this office from 1994 to 1998. In recent years, Trittin has appeared primarily as a foreign policy expert. He celebrates his 70th birthday in July.
