Against the background of further increasing corona numbers, numerous flights have been canceled in China. As the party newspaper “Global Times” reported on Thursday, some airports in the country had already canceled the majority of their flights on Wednesday. More than 1,000 flights were canceled in the southern Chinese metropolis of Guangzhou, which was particularly hard hit by a corona outbreak. More than 700 flights were also canceled at the two major airports in the capital Beijing.
Flight cancellations, like lockdowns, forced quarantines and mass testing, are among the strict measures the government is taking to curb the spread of the virus. Despite the zero-corona policy being pursued, which is weighing heavily on the country’s economy, the number of infections has been rising nationwide for weeks. After 8176 corona diseases the day before, the authorities reported around 8800 further infections nationwide on Thursday. In addition to Guangzhou, the number of infections in other major cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing has also increased again in the past few days.
