A massive earthquake has shaken the central Pacific coast of Mexico. The US agency USGS gave the magnitude as 7.6 and the Mexican Seismological Institute as 7.7. The center of the earthquake was therefore southeast of the city of Aquila in the state of Michoacán on the Mexican Pacific coast. The US weather agency NOAA issued a tsunami warning. According to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, one person was killed by falling parts in the port city of Manzanillo in the state of Colima.

In the hour following the tremor, there were more than 70 aftershocks, the most severe measuring 5.1, national coordinator of civil protection Laura Velázquez said at a meeting of the National Emergency Committee.

According to the Mexican Civil Protection, Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum and the President, no damage was initially reported. However, it is still being checked how the situation in different regions is, it said. The broadcaster Televisa, on the other hand, reported damage. A hospital in the community of Maruata in Michoacán was reportedly badly damaged.

School classes were initially suspended in several states in the afternoon. The state electricity provider CFE reported some power outages.
