The driver of a train has died and 85 passengers have been slightly injured after the collision between a passenger train and a freight train at the Sant Boi de Llobregat station (Barcelona). Civil Protection has activated the alert phase of the railway emergency plan after the incident.

The accident occurred after the freight convoy derailed, and this affected a Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) passenger train, which covers the Llobregat-Anoia line. The deceased is the driver of one of the trains. Two injured are in less serious condition, and have been transferred to the Moisès Broggi Hospital in the municipality and the remaining 83, minor.

At the scene of the event, 10 Fire Brigade crews from the Generalitat are currently working to evacuate the passengers and secure the catenary.

For its part, from Ferrocarrils they have detailed that the train service runs from the Plaza de España station to Cornellá Riera, and from the Colonia Güell station to Igualada and Manresa.

In the area there are also members of the Emergency Medical System (SEM), two helicopters, as well as a dozen Mossos d’Esquadra patrols and two psychologists.
