In early July, a traffic cop tried to stop a 23-year-old driver whose vehicle did not meet the specifications. However, the driver drove on and only stopped when more police cars came up as reinforcements. He then came out of the car with his hands up.
Nevertheless, one of the police officers chased his dog after the unarmed black man. Bodycam recordings by the police show that the situation was actually under control. The suspect even got on his knees. Another police officer warned: “Don’t let go of the dog when it has its arms up.” But the policeman ignored it. In the video, the Belgian Malinois (a variant of the Belgian Shepherd Dog) can be seen biting the man and yanking his arm.
Now the local police have reacted and fired the cop with immediate effect. He did not “meet the standards and expectations that apply to police officers,” according to a statement quoted by the US media. He was suspended from duty just days after the incident. However, the Ohio police union said the police officer had been fired without a valid reason and would take action.
The Republican Governor of Ohio, Mike DeWine, and the White House also commented on the incident. DeWine emphasized the importance of police officer training. In smaller towns, police officers often do not get the training they need. Karine Jean-Pierre, the White House press secretary, called the incident “terrible”.
