Hawthorn species were already used medicinally in ancient times, for example against diarrhea, colic and to stop bleeding. In the first century AD, the plant was mentioned by the Greek physician Pedanios Dioscorides. He is one of the most famous doctors of antiquity and is considered a pioneer of pharmacology. The first investigations into the healing power of hawthorn were made in the USA in 1896.
