Olaf Gericke is the new President of the District Council of North Rhine-Westphalia. The delegates of the 31 districts voted for the Warendorf district administrator, as the association announced on Tuesday evening in Düsseldorf. “The districts are in a time of great challenges,” said the CDU politician, according to the announcement after his election. He will do everything in his power to protect their interests.

The biggest challenge at the moment is the refugee crisis. “The community family is at the limit and expects more support from the federal and state governments,” said Gericke. Other central tasks are climate protection, civil protection, digitization, artificial intelligence, modern mobility and recruitment of junior staff in public administration.

Gericke was previously the first vice president of the district council. As association president, he succeeds District Administrator Thomas Hendele (CDU, Mettmann district), who was in office from October 2012 to March 2023 and has now been appointed honorary president.
