The former motorcycle racer Alex Hofmann defends the General German Automobile Club (ADAC) and the German Motor Sport Association (DMSB) when it comes to promoting young talent. “Germany has never been so well positioned,” said Hofmann on Friday evening on the sidelines of the Sachsenring race weekend. “When I was young there were a few crazy families who drove around Europe with a dream. Today there are a lot more options and places to go. People like to hit it, but the situation has never been as good as it is now.”
Lukas Tulovic is currently the only regular German driver in the world championship. However, the associations are trying to counteract this development and position themselves better across the board through joint promotion of talent. “That’s our problem. We have to ensure that motorsport becomes attractive again through the regional associations. We can only be successful at the top across the board,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, CEO of ADAC.
First and foremost it’s about taking fears and showing a way, said motorsport boss Thomas Voss from ADAC. This could also be achieved through school projects. “That’s the ideal picture,” says Voss. “But motorsport is not without its dangers, and some teachers have a hard time with that. It would be important, and we want to get there, that our local clubs support us to push away concerns. But we all have to pull together.” The German teams and ex-pilots like Hofmann or the former Moto2 world champion Stefan Bradl should also be involved in the plans.
