“Your bets are in safe hands”, “Betting is our sport”, “This is our game”.

Slogans like these flicker across the TV screen before every football broadcast. Anyone who watches football in Germany cannot avoid advertising from sports betting providers. Before and after each game, during the half-time break, the providers sometimes even sponsor individual games such as the top Bundesliga game on Saturday evening. Well-known testimonials stand for the companies. Oliver Kahn advertised sports betting for a long time, as did Lothar Matthäus and sports presenter Laura Wontorra. But despite the borrowed seriousness of the football stars, resistance is forming in the rows of fans – and that could cause explosives.
