With the beautiful Verona time trial, a somewhat watery Giro d’Italia ended, uniform, without too much epic, which was won by the Australian Jay Hindley against a cold Carapaz, who succumbed on the walls of the Marmolada on Saturday’s stage.
The fastest against the clock in the last stage of the pink ‘corsa’ was the Italian Matteo Sobrero with a time of 22 minutes and four seconds; but, frankly, the last day of the Giro did not hide any unknowns. With the podium and the jerseys decided, the third classified of the race, Mikel Landa, let himself go in Verona. Speed was never his strong suit, he arrived in 76th position at the historic Veronese Arena, but he did it with a smile.
Seven years later, the Basque was back on the Giro podium, his best position in a Grand Tour. His teammate in the Bahrain, Pello Bilbao, was fifth, while the revelation of this Giro, Juanpe López (Trek), finished in tenth position. In addition, the man from Lebrija takes home the white ‘maglia’, which crowns him as the best young man in the centenary Italian race.
