2,000 tourists and 1,000 employees are stuck on a cruise ship off the East African island of Mauritius – because there was a suspicion of a possible cholera outbreak on board. Now the all-clear came: the bacterium Vibrio cholerae was not the cause of the passengers’ diarrhea.
However, the assumption alone was enough to attract worldwide attention. In complete contrast to the actual catastrophe that is currently unfolding on the African continent and parts of Asia: The epidemic is raging there like rarely before: thousands are succumbing to the bacterium – a catastrophe that could actually be avoided if it were not for our indifference.
