The convicted murderer of eleven-year-old Lena from Emden has to answer to the court again today. The public prosecutor’s office accuses the 29-year-old of having raped a woman and sexually assaulted another woman in the correctional facility.

In June 2020, he is said to have raped a fellow patient on the grounds of a psychiatric facility in the Ammerland district. Two months earlier he is said to have sexually assaulted a woman there.

The public prosecutor’s office in Aurich approved the easing measures in the closed psychiatric facility. They came into force at the beginning of 2020, said a spokesman for the authorities. The basis for the approval was the assessment of experts who had assessed the risk of abuse as low. Several relaxation and forecast commissions as well as an external assessment came to this conclusion. The spokesman for the public prosecutor said that “a start was made with short, temporally and spatially limited sole exits to the hospital grounds”.

According to the Oldenburg district court, the 29-year-old is now in another psychiatric hospital.

Lena’s death in a parking garage in Emden moved people nationwide in 2012. The regional court in Aurich found the then 19-year-old perpetrator guilty of murder, attempted sexual abuse and dangerous bodily harm. It considered the young man to be of limited criminal responsibility because of a severe personality disorder, and he was placed in a closed psychiatric facility. The presiding judge said when the verdict was announced that the man was a danger to the general public and that he was suffering from a mental abnormality.
