The Austrian Islamist Kujtim Fejzulai, originally from North Macedonia, opened fire on November 2, 2020 in a busy part of Vienna. The 20-year-old, who had previously been in prison, killed four people and injured 23 others before being shot dead by police. The jihadist militia Islamic State (IS) claimed responsibility for the crime.
The Austrian government was criticized after the assassination for lack of supervision of the assassin. Fejzulai was convicted in 2018 for trying to join the IS militia in Syria.
The secret services had also been informed about his attempts to contact Islamic fundamentalists in neighboring countries and to buy weapons after his release from prison. However, they hadn’t concluded from this that the danger emanated from him.
