Club boss Fernando Carro from the top Bundesliga team Bayer Leverkusen believes an imminent salary cap in football is possible. “It’s being discussed – even with UEFA. It’s not easy because not everyone wants it. But I see a 50/50 chance that a limit will come in the next two years,” Carro told the “Kölner Stadt- Indicator”. The 59-year-old is a member of several international football committees, including a board member of the European club association ECA. “I’m actually a liberal person, but in football the spiral is going so upward that a salary cap is necessary,” said Carro.
He has also set himself the goal of improving the international match calendar. “It is unacceptable that the Africa Cup is being played in the middle of the season,” said Carro. “In order to change that, I will enter into a dispute with FIFA. We will also check whether there is a legal chance of not having to release the players.” But he doesn’t think this option is realistic.
Bayer Leverkusen is expected to be particularly hard hit by the continental tournament, which will be played in Ivory Coast in January and February. In center forward Victor Boniface, winger Nathan Tella (both Nigeria), Edmond Tapsoba (Burkina Faso), Odilon Kossounou (Ivory Coast) and Amine Adli (Morocco), five Leverkusen professionals are national players of African Cup participants.
