The Lempzours castle of Guionie looks very small compared to the grand castles of Perigord. It has a unique cachet due to its originality, and its turbulent past over the centuries.
It was originally a Neolithic site and then a monolithic, feudal motte (1). In the 12th century, it served as the seat of the Major Commandery for the Templars. It was destroyed in 1569 by the Wars of Religion. The interior fittings were probably completed during Louis XV’s regency.
Christophe Dutrone, who works in the departmental archive, and his family share their passion for the castle with the public. They have decided to make it available to as many people possible. They have invested their own money in a major restoration of the castle, with the help of crowdfunding through the Dartagnans Foundation and Vieilles Maisons francaises.
