My mother was in her early 80s when she told me about visiting an even older friend. What I heard amused me as much as it frightened me. The two women only became closer to each other after the death of their husbands and used Sundays in particular to chat over coffee and cake when the weather was nice. So they had once again sat in the garden and enjoyed the sun. And suddenly the girlfriend escaped: “It can’t last much longer.”
