The latest Canadian border alleviations for COVID-19 have encouraged the return of travel, as shown by the increase in the number of international arrivals to Canada for the month of April, which approached the pre-pandemic level.
Foreign visitors are taking the opportunity to visit the country, as 365,800 of them have arrived at Canadian airports. This is a number 20 times higher than that recorded in April 2021, according to Statistics Canada.
But they are not yet fully back compared to the same period in 2019, when 494,400 air arrivals were recorded.
Canadians are also on the rise on planes, with 1.2 million returning from a visit abroad in April, an increase of more than 1 million from April 2021.
This number is however still lower than the levels observed before the pandemic, in April 2019, specified the federal agency.
Americans have not shunned their northern neighbor either, with 479,500 trips by US residents noted at land border crossings, an increase of 415,700 compared to the same month last year.
More than one million additional Canadians also returned from the United States by land compared to April 2021, for a total of 1,262,900.
As of April 1, fully vaccinated travelers are no longer required to provide a negative COVID-19 screening test result in order to enter Canada.
Travelers are also no longer required to give a quarantine plan when arriving in the country since April 25.
