On flag day in the Volksparkstadion, HSV coach Tim Walter also went to his workplace in a good mood with a flag before the game against Arminia Bielefeld. The 2: 1 (1: 0) of his Hamburger SV against Ostwestfalen in the 2nd Bundesliga was not a lot of fun for him. A week before the top duel at leaders Darmstadt 98, Walter’s team struggled to do their duty. “We played too statically, didn’t show enough courage, didn’t start enough depth. We made too many mistakes in the passing game and didn’t move enough,” criticized Walter.
The fact that the game ended well for the hosts in front of the first-class crowd of 56,905 spectators was due to the goals of Ludovit Reis (26th minute) and the outstanding Bakery Jatta (57th). Bastian Oczipka (51st) had temporarily equalized the uncomfortable guests.
The Hamburgers also benefited twice from decisions made after the intervention of the video assistant: Arminia’s supposed opening goal by Frederik Jäkel (13th) was rightly withdrawn for offside. Referee Daniel Siebert later watched a duel between Jonas Meffert and Sebastian Vasiliadis (22nd) on the screen. HSV player Meffert unintentionally stepped on Bielefeld’s foot in the penalty area. Siebert stuck to his decision and did not point to the penalty spot.
And so the Hamburgers travel four points behind the Darmstadt team on Saturday (8.30 p.m. / Sport1 and Sky) to Hesse. HSV’s lead over 1. FC Heidenheim on the promotion relegation place is also four points.
The dress rehearsal for the summit was not particularly brilliant. Only now and then did the playful class of the Hamburgers shine through. Especially when Reis and the playful Jatta were on the ball. On the other hand, midfielder Laszlo Benes, whom coach Walter called back into the starting XI after a strong showing as a substitute, was not the impetus he had hoped for. A free kick on the crossbar of the Bielefeld goal was his most striking scene (53).
The Hamburgers were lucky in their leadership. Reis’ shot was deflected by Guilherme Ramos from Bielefeld. Miro Muheim had prepared the hit with the hoe, which is worth seeing. Shortly before the break, Bielefeld goalkeeper Martin Fraisl parried a precise free-kick from Jean-Luc Dompé.
Bielefeld came out of the break confident and rewarded himself. HSV keeper Daniel Heuer Fernandes was able to fend off the ball from Fabian Klos, but he had no chance against Oczipka’s follow-up shot. Arminia tried a lot and created some good opportunities. But it was no longer enough to win a point with the favorites. In injury time, Siebert denied a supposed penalty from Hamburger despite a VAR call.
After the final whistle, that was of little interest. Rather, some already looked at the game in Darmstadt. Jatta has already revealed his preparation plan to Sky: “Go home, eat well and sleep well.”
