The high temperatures forecast for the coming days represent a preview of summer. During the weekend it will be possible to reach 40 degrees in cities such as Seville, Badajoz or Córdoba, while in cities such as Zaragoza, Toledo or Madrid the maximum 38 degrees will be exceeded.
These conditions can affect both the car and the drivers and passengers, especially considering that it is very likely that there will be an increase in the number of trips to or from summer areas. To prevent incidents and breakdowns due to excess heat, the following recommendations should be taken into account:
1. Check engine temperature: vehicle overheating is one of the biggest risks in a heat wave.
To prevent this, it is useful to control the temperature of the motor. When it approaches the red alert zone, it is advisable not to stop it suddenly. It is useful, however, to turn off the air conditioning and open the windows. This will make it easier for the engine to start to cool down, having fewer loads to support.
2. Check the cooling system and check the operation of the air conditioning. Low coolant level and fluid aging can lead to poor vehicle cooling. Likewise, for greater comfort for the driver, it is essential to check that the air conditioning is working properly.
3. Check the oil level: a very low level is harmful at high temperatures and causes the system to lose efficiency, which can generate added complications.
4. Roll down the windows when entering the vehicle to equalize the interior and exterior temperature before putting on the air conditioning system. This practice avoids overloads of use and extends the life of the air conditioning elements.
5. Check the condition and level of the brake fluid: With high temperatures, the brakes lose effectiveness, so it is vital to check their conditions if the vehicle is going to be used in extreme heat.
6. Do not leave the car idling with the air conditioning or climate control in use while waiting or resting, as the battery may be discharged.
7. Avoid driving in hours of maximum heat. In addition to affecting the engine, this could cause the tires to overheat. Likewise, checking their condition and pressure and setting them up is useful to avoid incidents. With high temperatures, they are more prone to punctures and blowouts.
8. Never leave elderly people, minors or animals inside, even with the windows open.
9. Maintain proper hydration, constantly drinking plenty of water and other liquids, such as fruit juices. Carry enough water if you travel with children or elderly people. Avoid alcohol and caffeinated drinks with a high level of sugar.
10. Park in shaded areas and protect the interior of the vehicle with a sunshade. The direct incidence of the sun on the interior can cause damage and deformities.
