Push-ups are part of almost every bodyweight workout – after all, there is hardly a more effective exercise. Around 200 muscles are used, primarily the chest muscles, but also arms, shoulders and abdomen. And if you look at Lucas Helmke, you can see pretty clearly what effect push-ups have on the body.
The Australian, who is an accountant by trade, has set a new world record in this discipline. He did a total of 3206 push-ups – and that within just one hour. That’s an average of 53 executions per minute, so almost every second a push-up. Achievements that are likely to cause sore muscles for many other amateur athletes just reading. So far, according to “Guinness World Records”, the best value was 3182, set by Helmke’s compatriot Daniel Scali last year.
The 33-year-old was not allowed to cheat: Unclean statements, as they are often seen, were not allowed. Helmke’s push-up orgy at a Brisbane gym was closely monitored, as is usual with world record attempts. That meant: The body had to remain stretched, with each execution Helmke had to go down to a 90-degree change between elbows and forearms and then straighten his arms again.
Incidentally, the new world record holder didn’t do it perfectly either: 34 of his push-ups were not recognized because of incorrect form. The rest was still enough to break the record. Helmke had trained for this for two to three years. Guinness World Records quoted the new push-up king as saying that he wanted to “offer inspiration” to his one-year-old son and show him that “nothing is impossible”. Helmke does not want to rest on his laurels: he is already aiming for more push-up records.
