Just before Christmas, I decided to give up sugar. Of course the cookies on the kitchen table were a terrible temptation – and then the dominoes in the fridge. I suffered a lot in the first few days. While the rest of my family continued snacking, I practiced abstinence. Yes, sometimes it felt like withdrawal. That was two years ago now. I’ve been asked many times since then why I did that. You’re not overweight, was a sentence I often heard. True, but I had taken stock. For example, I ate Bircher muesli for breakfast. Coffee was only possible with sugar. Then a few Toffifees in between, a chocolate pudding for dessert, then gummy bears, cookies and so on. Plus Cola, of course. It added up quite a bit. At some point I lost track of how much sugar I was consuming.
