The THW Kiel handball team won their last home game in the preliminary round of the Champions League. The North Germans prevailed on Wednesday in front of 7803 spectators in their home arena with 39:27 (17:15) against the Slovenian champions RK Celje. Magnus Landin was Kiel’s best pitcher with nine goals. Ante Ivankovic, Mitja Janc and Matic Suholeznik were each successful for the guests five times.
With 14:12 points, the Kielers remain fourth in Group B, but still have the chance to reach third place on the last day of the coming week. For Celje it is clear that the season in the premier class is over after the preliminary round.
The hosts dominated the game from the start, 9:6 (14th minute) and 14:10 (23rd minute). However, the German record champions could not completely convince, especially on the offensive. The Slovenians, who had surprisingly won the first leg 38:36, initially stayed within striking distance.
After the change of sides, the dominance of the Kiel team continued. At 27:20 (43 rd ) the lead was seven hits for the first time. Goalkeeper Niklas Landin provided security with his saves. When the right-hander Rune Dahmke scored from the right winger to make it 30:21 (48th), the preliminary decision was made.
