The SG Flensburg-Handewitt celebrated a clear victory on the first day of the Handball Bundesliga. In front of 6143 spectators in the campus hall, the title co-favorite defeated the northern rival HSV Hamburg 37:32 (16:14) on Thursday. The best throwers were Johannes Golla with ten goals for Flensburg, who were not even behind, and Casper Mortensen with seven goals for Hamburg.

Both teams immediately pushed the pace, but made a few mistakes. Flensburg took a clear lead for the first time after a goal by Swedish playmaker Jim Gottfridsson to make it 6:3 (6th minute). From the middle of the first half, the guests had to do without Dani Baijens. The Dutchman saw the red card after an action against SG new signing Simon Pytlick.

Hamburg didn’t let this tough decision throw them off and stuck with it. Just seconds before the half-time whistle, Mads Mensah Larsen gave the hosts a two-goal lead.

With three goals in a row, the SG made an optimal start to the second half and then even increased the lead to 21:15 (35th) and 23:16 (37th). Immediately afterwards, HSVH coach Torsten Jansen took the second time-out in the second period to put his team’s game back in order. The fact that Hamburg couldn’t come close was also due to Flensburg goalkeeper Kevin Möller. In the end, the Dane made 19 saves.
