ThSV Eisenach remains a power at home. In the Werner-Aßmann-Halle, the handball Bundesliga team surprisingly won against the favored Rhein-Neckar Löwen 29:26 (13:13) on Monday evening. In front of 3,150 loud spectators, Eisenach’s Alexander Saul became the best thrower of the home seven with seven goals. From ThSV’s point of view, the draw for the round of 16 games in the DHB Cup during the half-time break was less fortunate: the Thuringians have to play away at HSV Hamburg on December 12th or 13th instead of in their beloved own hall.
The Wartburgstadt team found their way into the game better against the top team from North Baden. In the meantime they led by three goals, mainly because goalkeeper Matija Spikic was in a good mood and saved more than a third of the shots. Shortly before the break, the guests got into the game better and made it 13:13 at halftime.
The second round was much more heated, and neither team was initially able to gain an advantage. Only in the last six minutes did ThSV coach Misha Kaufmann’s team slowly pull away. In the crucial moments, the hosts, energetically driven by their fans, found the better solutions, which were rewarded with a jump to tenth place in the table. The Rhein-Neckar Löwen, after all the reigning cup winners, remain fourth.
Next Friday the Eisenachers have to play away again. From 7 p.m., fifth-placed VfL Gummersbach will be fighting for points.
