The handball players of the SC DHfK Leipzig have clearly missed the hoped-for trend reversal in the Bundesliga. Coach Runar Sigtryggsson’s team lost at Bergisches HC on Thursday evening by 28:32 (13:19) and thus suffered their sixth defeat in a row. This is a negative record in the history of SC DHfK in the Bundesliga. The best thrower from Leipzig, who is still in twelfth place with 24:32 points, was Luca Witzke. The international scored six goals.
Sigtryggsson had increased the pressure on his team before the game. “It is our aim to play at least at eye level in all games,” said the Icelander, and above all held his leading players responsible. However, the desired reaction did not initially appear in the game at the BHC. In front of 2172 spectators, the Leipzig team slept through the initial phase and quickly fell 1:5 behind (8th minute). Although they found their rhythm offensively afterwards, they continued to reveal large gaps in defense and in particular were unable to stop the hosts’ play through the circle. With a 5:0 run, the BHC pulled away to 19:11 shortly before the break.
In the second round, however, Sigtryggsson’s protégés showed their morale and fought back with force against the impending defeat, although Simon Ernst (32nd) and the best goalscorer to date Matej Klima (40th) were eliminated prematurely with red cards. Patrick Wiesmach crowned Leipzig’s best phase in terms of play with the 23:25 goal (49th). In an increasingly rough game, however, the BHC retained control and quickly increased the gap to four goals. There was no longer a serious chance for the guests to turn the tide.
