The Bundesliga handball players of SC DHfK Leipzig suffered their first home defeat in 2023. Coach Runar Sigtryggsson’s team lost to VfL Gummersbach on Thursday evening after a weak second half by 30:34 (17:15). In front of 4277 spectators, Sime Ivic was the best SC DHfK thrower with eight goals, slipping down to ninth place with 24:24 points.

The Leipzig fans only had reason to celebrate immediately before the throw-in. Viggo Kristjansson, by far the SC DHfK’s top scorer this season, announced his contract extension until 2027. On the other hand, the Icelandic international was unable to intervene against Gummersbach. A week earlier, in the 32:36 defeat in Erlangen, he tore his adductors, which meant the premature end of the season for him.

Without Kristjansson, Leipzig found it difficult to get into the game. They initially revealed major problems with the fast counter-attacks by VfL and fell 3:6 (7th minute) behind. In the course of the first half, however, the hosts adjusted better to the well-known speed game of the promoted team. In attack, the SC DHfK came to good conclusions from the backcourt and after four goals in a row took the lead 9:7 (12th). Up to 23:21 (40 th ) Leipzig maintained their two-goal lead before they eased off significantly in attack. They acted too statically against the attentive defense of VfL and could hardly find any gaps. The hosts remained without a goal for almost ten minutes, so that Gummersbach was able to pull away to 28:24 (52nd). Although the SC DHfK fought back to 27:28 (55th), they presented themselves defensively in the final phase too vulnerable and deservedly lost.
