Professor Mechsner, why do so many women suffer from endometriosis in our modern times? It’s because of the number of cycles. Just 100 years ago, a woman experienced around 40 menstrual periods in her life. In the remaining months, pregnancy, breastfeeding, hunger and stress stopped the cycle. Today, women in industrialized nations have fewer children, breastfeed less, and the interval between the first and last menstrual periods has increased. This means they menstruate around 400 times, or ten times more often. Nature didn’t plan that.
