Four months after the hostage-taking in the Altmarkt-Galerie Dresden, investigations into the perpetrator have been dropped. Since the accused is dead, no further investigation will be carried out against him, as the public prosecutor and the police in Dresden announced today.
The 40-year-old died as a result of the operation on December 10, 2022. The case against him on suspicion of manslaughter and hostage-taking had ended “for legal reasons”. There is no evidence of the involvement of other people. Investigations against a SEK officer on suspicion of manslaughter were also dropped, saying he was “proven to be innocent”.

The authorities assume that the perpetrator holed up there on the morning of the Saturday in Advent with a child from his circle of acquaintances and the employee of a drugstore. When a shot was fired in the office, “immediate emergency access” took place.
The SEK officer had the man immediately disabled due to “the recognizable imminent danger to life for the hostages with a targeted shot” in order to save their lives. That was “justified by self-defense in the form of emergency assistance in accordance with Section 32 of the Criminal Code”.
The 40-year-old shot his mother in the head in a residential building in the Prohlis district in the morning, and the 62-year-old died. According to the information, it is still being determined where the man got the illegal pistol and ammunition from. He then broke into a downtown radio station at gunpoint and fired several times. Then he moved on to the popular shopping center.
He was seriously injured during the operation in the Altmarkt gallery and died a little later in the hospital – the hostages remained externally unharmed.
