A woman was stabbed to death on a street in London in the middle of the day. Police arrested a 22-year-old on suspicion of murder, the Metropolitan Police said. The authorities initially did not provide any information about the possible motive.

The Times newspaper quoted an eyewitness as saying that on Thursday the man wanted to steal the handbag of the woman, who was said to be between 60 and 70 years old. The perpetrator pulled on the bag, but held the woman. The man then stabbed her three times, the eyewitness said.

Rescue workers treated the victim, but the woman died from her injuries. The suspected perpetrator was soon arrested about a kilometer from the crime scene in the northwest of the British capital.
