It is the highest amount ever received by a multilateral health organization. The Global Fund originally targeted $18 billion to eradicate the three deadly diseases by 2030. However, as of Wednesday, commitments were still missing from London and Rome, “two of the biggest donors,” Sands noted, whose contributions “we expect in due course.”

The record goal of 18 billion dollars was announced to make up for the setbacks in the fight against AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria caused by the corona pandemic.

At the donor conference, Chancellor Scholz praised the progress made by the Global Fund and welcomed the organization’s plan to invest six billion dollars in health systems such as pandemic prevention and preparedness.

“I am pleased to announce that Germany will contribute 1.3 billion euros to the Global Fund over the next three years,” said Scholz. “We are hopeful that this 30 percent increase will help meet the $18 billion recovery goal,” the Chancellor added.

The highest contribution came from the USA with six billion dollars, ahead of France with 1.6 billion euros, followed by Germany. The European Union pledged 715 million euros and the Gates Foundation 912 million dollars.

The Global Fund was established in 2002. It consists of governments, civil society groups and the private sector. There is a round of funding every three years. At the last donor conference in France in 2019, 14 billion euros were raised.
