T-shirt weather on New Year’s Eve – that’s possible, at least in southern Germany. The German Weather Service (DWD) expects record-breaking mild weather at the turn of the year. According to the meteorologists, the more southerly, the warmer.

While in the north the thermometer rises to between 9 degrees on Sylt and up to 17 degrees from Münsterland to southern Brandenburg in rainy weather, the 20-degree mark could be cracked along the Upper Rhine and Neckar. In Bavaria, too, maximum values of around 20 degrees are possible, especially south of the Danube.

Storm and hurricane gusts expected

However, according to DWD information, it is also very windy at the turn of the year – especially in the northwest half of Germany. Storm gusts with speeds of up to 70 kilometers per hour are expected from the Eifel to the North Sea and Lusatia. Top speeds of up to 80 or 90 kilometers per hour could even be achieved near the coast and in the mountains. Hurricane gusts are even expected on the Brocken during the course of New Year’s Eve.

“But other than that, care must be taken to ensure that the New Year’s rockets aren’t blown away by the wind,” advised DWD meteorologist Felix Dietzsch.

The new year will also start very mildly, according to the forecast, it will only gradually get cooler in the following days. The wind will also decrease significantly again at the beginning of 2023 from Monday. However, given the mild temperatures with maximum values between 9 and 14 degrees, there is still little in sight of a cold winter.
