Mr. von Waldenfels, coffee is becoming scarce. Current studies predict: Harvests will shrink. Around half of the coffee cultivation areas are threatened by climate change. Does this forecast make you nervous? We take it very seriously. The forecasts are based on robust data. But we don’t yet know exactly which regions will be hit particularly hard. That’s where the uncertainty lies. Why does the coffee tree react so sensitively to changes in temperature and precipitation? The coffee plant is a diva. She likes a consistently warm climate. Then there are times when it likes drought stress to develop lots of flowers. In other phases she likes it wet. And woe betide you, it doesn’t suit her. Then the cherries become small and the harvest turns out badly. Does that mean rising prices for coffee drinkers if the diva bitches?
