In the forests of North Rhine-Westphalia, significantly fewer trees were felled last year due to pest infestation or damage caused by drought and storms. The so-called damaged wood fell significantly from 2021 to 2022 from a good 18 million to 10.4 million cubic meters, as reported by the State Statistical Office IT.NRW on Thursday. In 2022, more than 80 percent of the wood damage was caused by pests. This includes the bark beetle in particular. Other causes last year were storm damage (9.5 percent) and drought (7.2 percent).
