White cream, red cherries and chocolate shavings: the Black Forest gateau is a classic in many pastry shops. In the southwest of Baden-Württemberg there is even a competition for the sweet dish that is usually served with coffee.

In Todtnau, amateurs and professionals once again lined up to show off their baking skills at the Black Forest Cherry Cake Festival.

The approximately 30 participants each had only 20 minutes to finish their cake. Biscuit base, cherries and some utensils for the kitchen had to be brought along. Kirschwasser, cream and jam, on the other hand, were made available, as were mixers and so-called cream blowers.

The cakes or individual pieces were sold after the competition. The festival has been around since 2004.

There are different theories about the origin of the cake. In many places in the Black Forest, people are convinced that it came from a cream and cherry dessert that has been known in the region for a long time. Or was the confectioner Josef Keller the inventor? He claimed to have invented the cake in the Rhineland in 1915.
