A major fire broke out in a body and paint shop in Hamburg-Marienthal on Wednesday. Because of the heavy smoke development, residents within a radius of around two kilometers around the scene of the fire were asked to close windows and doors as a precaution, as a spokesman for the fire brigade said. The fire brigade is on site with around 50 firefighters. No one was injured, a police spokesman said. It was initially unclear how the fire started.
Several roads around the scene of the fire were also closed while the fire was being put out. Rail traffic on the route to Lübeck was also affected and was stopped between Wandsbek and Rahlstedt around 5.30 p.m., as a railway spokesman said. The police and railways lifted the closures in the evening. The train tracks are near the workshop.
